FIRST “IQ”, then “EQ”… How’s Your “CRIME Q”?

In a dangerous situation, it may seem like time speeds up. Knowing how to avoid a bad situation and how to handle yourself in one can be the difference in that event’s outcome, so here are 13 tips on how to stay safe, stay calm, and stay alive.

  1. Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, something is probably wrong! Head for a crowded place or to the nearest police station as quickly as possible if you think you might be in danger.
  2. Always be aware of your surroundings, both in and out of the home, and take note if anything seems out of the ordinary.
  3. Make certain your home is prepared for a home invasion, install several layers of security and burglar proofing round your property including robust burglar bars on all windows, security gates at all entry points including patio enclosures, security doors, a safe zone, an activated alarm system that alerts both an armed response company and those inside the property, additional locks on doors such as chain links, and an intercom from the house to the gate.
  4. Before you use an ATM, look around and make certain there isn’t anyone hanging about or watching the ATM, practice ATM safety and make sure to always keep your banking details secured.
  5. Don’t flash valuables while in your car or going for a walk or jog. Keep them safely hidden away and locked away when possible.
  6. Get to know your neighbours and form strong relationships with them. They will usually be the first to help you in an emergency and can help you keep an eye on your property when you’re away.
  7. Are you receiving obscene or annoying phones calls from strangers? First thing, you need to do is hang up, second thing, block the number! If these phone calls are threatening in nature, report them to the police. Remember to keep your phone number as safe as possible.
  8. Do not use your full name on your phone answering service. Remember to always keep your identity safe and secured.
  9. If you have a puncture or other vehicle problems, find a safe place to check it out such as a petrol station. Do not take other motorists’ word for it that you have a problem with your car, it could be a hijacking.
  10. Always keep a safe distance from the car in front of you to enable you to change lanes or drive away in a hurry should something feels threatening or suspicious.
  11. Look around before entering your driveway. Make sure there is nothing and no one that looks suspicious following you. Also ensure that your pavement bushes and trees are cut back to give less hiding spaces for would be criminals.
  12. Slow down before you reach a red traffic light, especially at night. Keep your vehicle moving slowly and distance yourself from other vehicles so you can speed out of danger.
  13. Establish or join a neighbourhood WhatsApp security group to report anything out of the ordinary. Encourage the group to stick to security!
